The UN Security Council (UNSC) Monday adopted a resolution to strengthen its support for the security sector reform in countries emerging from conflict, and assist them to prioritise the development of the sector.
The 15-member body unanimously adopted the first-ever stand- alone resolution on security sector reform after a day-long debate chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, which holds the Council's April presidency, Xinhua reported.
The resolution stressed that reforming the security sector in post-conflict environments is critical to the consolidation of peace and stability, promoting poverty reduction, rule of law and good governance, extending legitimate State authority, and preventing countries from relapsing into conflict.
The Council "resolves to continue to include and prioritize, as appropriate, security sector reform aspects as an integral part of the mandates of United Nations peacekeeping operations and special political missions".
