The Uttar Pradesh government set free 93 prisoners from their jail term - in a gesture of respect to former Prime Minister and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who turned 93 on Monday.
Of the freed prisoners, six were from the Lucknow zone, 19 from the Agra zone, 14 each from the Varanasi and Faizabad zones, 5 from the Gorakhpur zone, 16 from the Kanpur zone, 8 from the Allahabad zone, and 11 from the Bareilly zone, said a Home Department official.
