Uttar Pradesh minister for parliamentary affairs, minority welfare and urban development Chitranjan Swaroop died on Wednesday in New Delhi where he was undergoing treatment, an official here said.
Swaroop, 70, was a legislator from Muzaffarnagar and had been unwell for a long time and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the national capital, his close associates said.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav condoled Swaroop's death and recalled his services to the party and also as a minister.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan also recalled his personal bonding with Swaroop.
Opposition leaders also expressed grief at the death of Swaroop and recalled their personal associations with the minister.
The Uttar Pradesh assembly paid rich tributes to the departed soul and observed two-minute silence following which the house was adjourned.
