Shimla, April 24 (IANS) Raw uranium residuals were reportedly recovered from a Himachal Pradesh village during digging, an official said Wednesday. The area from where it was found has a history of uranium deposits.
During ground breaking for construction of a rainwater harvesting tank in Lambera village under the Khyah gram panchayat in Hamirpur district extracts of uranium were recovered by the villagers Tuesday night, block development officer Sunil Chandel told reporters in Hamirpur town.
He said the samples of black stones recovered from the spot, some 200 km from here, would be sent them to Bangalore for laboratory testing.
Chandel, who visited the spot Wednesday, said the villagers observed outburst of some poisonous gas during digging.
State geologist Arun Sharma told IANS that Hamirpur district was once known for rich uranium deposits and these have been extracted more than two decades ago by public sector National Mineral Development Corporation.
