Vijay Hazare Trophy: Mumbai beat defending champs Gujarat

Half-centuries by Aditya Tare and Siddhesh Lad coupled with an excellent bowling performance enable Mumbai to defeat defending champions Gujarat by 98 runs in a Group C match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy here on Saturday.

Asked to bat first, Mumbai notched up 273/9 in their alotted 50 overs. Tare top scored with 83 runs off 81 balls which included 13 hits to the fence.

Lad scored 64 runs, hitting two boundaries and five towering sixes during his 60-ball essay.

Coming together with Mumbai struggling at 85/4, the duo produced a 117-run partnership over 20 overs to stabilise the innings.

Gujarat pacer Chirag Parmar brought the partnership to an end by dismissing Tare in the 38th over before claiming Lad's wicket in his very next over.

Shardul Thakur and Abhishek Nayar also went back in quick succession as the Mumbai innings ran into trouble.

However, Aditya Dhumal hit an unbeaten 32 to help Mumbai recover to some extent.

Parmar ended up with figures of 4/42 while fellow pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Dahiya clinched a couple of wickets each.

In reply, openers Priyank Panchal and Parthiv Patel handed Gujarat a brisk start before Mumbai pacer Shivam Malhotra struck twice in the sixth over.

Panchal and Manprit Juneja tried to bring the innings back on track but the Mumbai bowlers managed to restrict the scoring rate. The duo soon went back to the pavilion in quick succession following Gujarat started to lose wickets at regular intervals.

In another match, Tamil Nadu defeated last year's runners-up Delhi by 42 runs in a Group B clash in Cuttack.

Opting to field first on winning the toss, Delhi captain Rishabh Pant saw his decision backfire as Tamil Nadu posted a mammoth 314/8 in their 50 overs.

Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik led the way with a quickfire century, scoring 118 runs off 97 balls with 13 boundaries and three sixes.

Baba Indrajith and Kaushik Gandhi also shone with the bat, scoring 46 and 41 respectively.

Ashish Nehra was the pick of the Delhi bowlers with a haul of 4/39 while left-arm spinner Manan Sharma returned 3/52.

In reply, Delhi could only manage to score 272 runs in 46.4 overs before being all out. The Delhi innings sufferred an early jolt when Shikhar Dhawan was bowled by Tamil Nadu pacer M. Mohammed in the sixth over.

Gautam Gambhir and Dhruv Shorey then attempted to bring the innings back on track by adding 86 runs between them in 108 deliveries.

Gambhir scored 51 runs off 71 balls before left-arm spinner Rahil Shah brought the partnership to an end by trapping him leg before.

Shorey went on to score 57 off 69 deliveries with nine hits to the fence.

Milind Kumar top scored with a quickfire 68 off 58 balls which included 11 boundaries. However, that did not prove to be enough to rescue Delhi.

Pacer Antony Dhas returned figures of 3/52 for Tamil Nadu while Vijay Shankar, Mohammed and Shah bagged a couple of wickets each.

In other group matches on the day, Bengal beat Andhra Pradesh by four wickets, Baroda defeated Railways by 30 runs while Haryana got the better of Odisha by five wickets.
