Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik has been denied permission to stage a hunger strike in Delhi from May 3, police said Thursday.

"The request sent by Malik for holding a protest at Jantar Mantar has been rejected," a Delhi Police officer told IANS.

The request was rejected on the grounds of anticipated law and order problem, the officer said.

On Wednesday, separatist leader Malik told IANS that he would hold a hunger strike to demand the return of the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat to Kashmir.

Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail and buried there Feb 9 and Bhat was also buried in the same prison following his execution in 1984.

Earlier announcing Malik's protest, the JKLF said in a statement: "The proposed hunger strike by Malik in Delhi is also aimed at highlighting the plight of thousands who are languishing in various jails", especially those serving life terms.
