Yemeni child with rare eye disorder operated in Bengaluru hospital

A 4-year-old Yemini girl child underwent an operation for a rare and complex eye disorder in a private hospital here, it was announced on Wednesday.

"The surgery saved 4-year-old Lara Waleed of Yemen from becoming visually challenged, as she was suffering from a rare congenital eye disease, which disrupts vision and would have lost her vision if not treated in time," said Agarwal's Eye Hospital in a statement here.

The surgery on her right eye was performed to mark 'World Sight Day'.

Lara had corneo lenticular adhesion syndrome since birth, which stuck her iris and lens to each other with cataract obstructing vision. She also developed secondary glaucoma due to the syndrome, the statement said.

Her parents had taken her to Egypt for treatment and she had to undergo two surgeries at the age of one.

"Though the surgeries helped in correcting her glaucoma, it did not correct her vision. The treatment went on for two years but only worsened Lara's condition.

"Apart from treating the corner lenticular adhesion syndrome, the biggest challenge in Lara was the tendency of her eye to shrink. Being young, the tissues inside her eyes are very minute and tender and the treatment called for multiple interventions on these tissues," said cataract surgeon and medical retina expert from Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital Bindiya Hapani in the statement.
