Hour daily bread

Government officials, especially in the finance ministry, say their daily responsibilities have gone from bad to worse. The reason, a senior North Block official explained, was unravelling government policy. “Till recently, our main job was to defend the government on a daily basis. Now, that job has become hourly,” he said. The upshot, he added, was that the focus on solving the myriad economic problems the country faces has been diffused.
