Letters: A burning question

This refers to Sunita Narain's column "The politics of particles" (Down to Earth, February 10). The government should take steps to provide LPG in rural areas at subsidised rates. The rural population should also be made aware of the side effects of burning biomass for cooking through the media because the rural folk are of the view that sticks and twigs are available in abundance, and they have been used for a long time. Since they have less knowledge about the negative implications of burning biomass, it's not only the duty of the government but also climate and social welfare organisations to send out timely cautionary messages to the rural population.
