This refers to the debate “Will the SIT on black money solve the problem?” (July 13). It would be naive to think that the court can take the required administrative steps to reduce the generation of black money. The Supreme Court can only jolt the government into taking concrete action to curb it.

It is not that major political parties are not aware of the menace of black money and how it is generated. All political parties depend heavily on unaccounted money for financing their elections, and implementing administrative and legal reforms to address the issue is just not their main agenda. For most parties, black money is just an election issue and none of them have a plan of action to deal with it.

Hopefully, the Supreme Court will compel political parties to implement effective measures to bring back the black money stashed in foreign banks and curb its further generation.
