This refers to Sunita Narain's column "Green buildings aren't that green" (Down to Earth, October 27). Can buildings with a glass facade be called green buildings? The answer is no. Glass traps heat and that leads to more electricity consumption since it requires air-conditioning. Also, builders do not mention the type of glass used in the construction of buildings. In other countries, there are certain specifications for using different types of glass. Using glass helps the builder reduce the cost of construction compared to using bricks, but it does not help the residents. In fact, glass creates problems for them. It requires regular cleaning and increases electricity expenses.

We need guidelines for the use of glass in buildings. The proposed Real Estate Regulation Bill should address this issue. Safety should be the prime criteria in a green building. Living in a glass-facade building is akin to a kiln, where one has to get used to the heat generated by glass, which is harmful.
