The survey on demonetisation is turning the country into a laughing matter

The survey on demonetisation is turning the country into a laughing matter. A mere 500,000 — or less than 0.05 per cent of the 1.03 billion mobile subscribers — responded (July 2016). Citing such a small number to claim that an overwhelming majority of the people supported demonetisation is an insult to the intelligence of the average Indian.

The increasing weakness of the Indian democracy lies in the perpetually emaciating Opposition that keeps scoring self-goals, as the latest tamasha of Akrosh Diwas proved. This is compounded by the “crawling when only asked to bend” attitude readily adopted by the bureaucracy and several leaders and institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India.

The bravado of instruction to Bharatiya Janata Party leaders that they should file expenditure statements for the period November 8 to December 31, 2016, camouflages the question of whether there was selective advance leakage of information of demonetisation. The period to be accounted for should have been a few some months prior to demonetisation.
