Letters: Learning from mistakes

This refers to 'The new servant leader' (February 13). In spite of what the BJP and the Congress would have us believe, voters have given a clear verdict on their choice of government. With the stunning victory of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), winning 67 out of 70 seats, and the decimation of two national parties, the faith of Delhiites in Arvind Kejriwal and his democratic approach to governance stand vindicated. Kejriwal being labelled as an anarchist and "dharnebaaz" failed to swing the mood of the voters.

Taking a cue from past mistakes, AAP should set its house in order and act like a ruling dispensation, not like a bunch of activists, set realistic goals for itself and go slow on fulfilling its poll promises. The party needs to tread cautiously in doling out freebies such as free water, which will be a drain on Delhi's exchequer, as the taxpayers' money is involved. The party, to get a grip on governance issues, needs to evolve a clear administrative mechanism to address the problems of the national capital. And to avoid getting embroiled in uncalled-for political imbroglios, it should not rush to fix things hastily in order to please all and sundry.
