The sudden decision by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to release all the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case indicates that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) will go to any lengths to gain political mileage ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. This not only demonstrates insolence towards the Supreme Court but also expresses distrust for the judicial system. The two prominent parties in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have been playing the sentiments card for a long time. If the convicts are freed, it would be the perilous precedent that may jeopardise ethical and constitutional values.
