Letters: Safety concerns

Explore Business Standard

This refers to the report “35 killed, 200 hurt as Kalka mail derails in UP” (July 11). It is deplorable that the Indian Railways, the world’s fourth-largest rail network, has such a poor track record in terms of passenger safety. The Comptroller and Auditor General report pointing out that between 2003 and 2008 more than 50 per cent of the Rs 46,000 crore allotted for safety work was not utilised shows the callous attitude of the authorities concerned. Much has been said on maintenance and technology and it is time the government gave due importance to safety and human life.
