Apart from Prakash Karat, there aren’t many people who show sustained consistency of belief. One such is George Fernandes. Despite his failing health, the socialist leader continues to champion what others call lost causes. For proof, flip through the latest issue of his journal, The other side — journal of socialist thought and action.

It reproduces the letter he wrote during the Emergency, while underground, to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. If Fernandes is steadfast in his beliefs, the Mumbai Taximen’s Union is equally loyal to him – it is the only advertiser, apart from the employees’ union of a nationalised bank.
