Virgin Airline founder Richard Branson once said the easiest way to become a millionaire is to start out a billionaire and then go into the airline business. At a recent awards ceremony, budget carrier Indigo founder Rahul Bhatia was asked the same question. His reply was that there were three ways to lose money. “You can get married to a nice-looking woman, and wine and dine. You can bet on the race tracks, that’s the fastest way to lose money, or you could start an airline, which is the surest way to lose money.” When asked how Air India could be turned around, he said the airline needs surgical intervention to survive.
