Union Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal has asked the West Bengal government to set up a specialised police force and station in every district of the state to crack down on power thieves.
Power theft has been a major drag on the exchequer of West Bengal as well as other states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In Gujarat, police officers used to accompany power department officials during field visits.
That seemed to have worked in curbing the menace in the state. The West Bengal government is yet to respond to the suggestion.
