Several Opposition parties, particularly those with members from Uttar Pradesh, are set to lose their members in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha in April. As many as 55 members are set to retire in the house of 245. The strength of the Samajwadi Party might come down significantly. One hears that SP member Naresh Agrawal has confided in his Opposition colleagues that he is sure to be nominated. Another contender from the SP, Kiranmoy Nanda, told friends how he and not Agrawal would be renominated by the party. In all of this, SP MP Jaya Bachchan is also set to retire and there is speculation that she might be sent to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal by the Trinamool Congress. The party neither denied nor confirmed the speculation. “She is a Bengali icon. We do not want to speculate about her,” a Trinamool source said.
