Having received massive support from different sections of the society in the city, the Aam Admi Pary (AAP) is contemplating to field its candidate from the Chandigarh constituency in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Taking a step forward in the direction, the party has launched “Main Bhi Hoon Aam Admi” campaign, under which party membership would be allowed for free to anyone who signs up  between January 10 and January 26.

It is worth mentioning that there are nearly ten thousand members who have registered from Chandigarh itself. Speaking to Business Standard, Rajeev Godara, Central Observer, AAP Chandigarh Unit, “ We are contemplating to contest for the Chandigarh constituency but its too early to comment on our candidate and other matters. The committee constituted by the party will take a decision in the regard and if everything finalized then an announcement will be made in this regard soon.”

If AAP field its candidate then there would be triangular fight between AAP, BJP and Congress. It is worth mentioning that Chandigarh —a union territory and the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana —is an important political centre of northern India and the political parties have already got into poll mode to woo the city voters.

During 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal had retained Chandigarh’s seat recording a hat-trick on the seat and defeating archrival Satya Pal Jain of BJP. Pawan Kumar Bansal had won Chandigarh seat in 1991, 1999 and 2004 and 2009

He also stated that AAP Chandigarh is organizing a ‘Chandigarh Volunteer Convention’, on 12th January 2014 in Chandigarh. The Convention’s main speaker will be AAP Leader and AAP National Executive member, Prof Yogendra Yadav.

Efforts to the ensure presence of maximum number of volunteers are currently being carried on across Chandigarh and several new persons have expressed their desire to actively volunteer with Aam Admi Party, for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and thereafter.

He also informed that AAP volunteers across the City have reported massive enthusiasm and support for AAP amongst all sections of the society.

He informed that Prof Yogendra Yadav, had toured over 12 districts of Haryana in the last one month and had addressed massive gatherings of volunteers everywhere, as a result 1.5 lakh people enrolled themselves for membership.

In continuance of this, Prof Yadav will be addressing volunteers in Chandigarh as well, in order to interact with them and also wants to share the importance, lessons and learning of the Delhi elections and brainstorm ways of replicating the AAP phenomena across the country.

He added that Yadav wants to bring home the point that AAP is not a substitute, but an alternative, which engages in alternative politics, not seen in mainstream politics since the JP movement.
