Gujarat increases women's reservation to 33% in govt jobs

Gujarat government today decided to increase of women's reservation in all posts and services of the state government to 33 per cent from current 30 per cent in a bid to give fillip to women empowerment and increase their participation in decision making.

Announcing the decision, state spokesperson Nitin Patel lauded its as historic decision by the first woman chief minister of the state Anandiben Patel. "Right now the scenario in this regard is 30 per cent reservation for women and as the Chief Minister increased it with 3 per cent, now the women reservation would be 33 per cent," Nitin Patel said in a statement.

Necessary amendments will be made in the Gujarat Civil Services (reservations posts for women) Rule 1997.

The government spokesperson said that the decision will be applicable to all important departments of the state like police, health, education, public administration which will now have 33 per cent women reservation in all the posts. This will give more career opportunities to women, Patel said.

Earlier, after Anandiben Patel took charge as chief minister in May state government has taken various decisions regarding effective execution of women's reservations. "Now, in the era of competition, this is an important and unique step taken by state government towards women empowerment and all-round development of the women," he added.
