The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party in Tamil Nadu announced the formation of an alliance with CPI(M) today.

The announcement came after Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa met CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat at her Poes Garden residence in Chennai today.

Speaking to reporters after her meeting with Karat, Jayalalithaa said the alliance would be successful, while stating it was not the time to discuss who the next Prime Minister would be, as that would arise only after the Lok Sabha election results.

The alliance would ensure success in Tamil Nadu and contribute to government formation at the Centre, said Karat.

CPI (M) had fought the last assembly polls with the AIADMK, which helped elect the former’s candidates to Rajya Sabha last year and this year, he added.

“We will speak to parties which were not ready to join hands with either Congress or BJP, to be a part of the alliance,” said Karat.

While the Communist party leaders have hinted that Jayalalithaa could be a Prime Ministerial candidate, Jayalalithaa said the focus would be on winning the 40 seats, 39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry.
