He said, “I’m proud to have fought alongside farmers against the National Democratic Alliance government’s anti-farmer amendments to the Land Bill.

” Adding, “But the fight to ensure that farmers are equal partners in the progress of the nation continues. Congress and I are committed to that goal.” Congress President Sonia Gandhi also interacted with the farmers. The celebrations mark the run up to the party’s massive Kisan Mazdoor Samman Rally at the Ramlila Ground here on September 20.

Using the occasion to also launch an attack on the PM Narendra Modi and his government, Gandhi said, “Modiji talks about democracy but does not talk about our farmers and labourers, who run this democracy. He forgets them.”

The celebrations were organised by the Youth Congress wing of the party led by its President Amarinder Singh Raja Brar. He said, “We have always fought for the rights of farmers and will always stand by them whenever there is a need to do so. Modi Government should stop favouring corporates and should work for poor people’s welfare.”  Brar had been handpicked by Rahul Gandhi to lead the IYC.

Assuring farmers of the party’s continued support Gandhi today said, “This is the victory of Congress. But it is the victory of farmers as well.”

Around 400 farmers from Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh met the Congress President and the Vice President to express their solidarity over the Land Acquisition bill issue.
