Prime Minister on Monday took potshots at Opposition parties for hitting out at his government over demonetisation. He asserted that poor people are within in the fight against corruption, black money. Sounding the poll bugle in Uttar Pradesh at Bharatiya Janata Party's Parivartan Yatra in Ghazipur, Modi scoffed at the Opposition for blaming him for the problems being faced by the poor and said he was better aware of the hardships being faced by commoners.

The Opposition came down heavily on the Narendra Modi government over the inconvenience caused to the people due to demonetisation.

Taking the nation by surprise, Modi on Tuesday night announced demonetisation of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes with effect from midnight, making these notes invalid in a major assault on black money, fake currency and corruption.

Here are 10 top quotes from Modi's speech:

# We don't lack money, but it is lying where it should not be.

# Only when people are ready to face inconvenience, then corruption will go.

# New whitewash gives out foul smell, but it is necessary.

# Some parties are facing major problem, a big worry saps their mind as to what to do now (after demonetisation).

# Some people wear a smile on the face. They even say Modi ji you have done a good job. But they instigate their party workers to oppose my decision.

# Projects started for Eastern UP are a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary though his party attacks me constantly

# There is no option left for the dishonest. I am only fulfilling the promise made at election time to fight corruption.

# My decision is a little harsh. When I was young, poor people used to ask for 'kadak' (strong) tea but it spoils the mood of rich.

# You cannot wash your sins off just by putting currency notes in the river Ganges.
