Sesa Goa Ltd. was conferred the ‘Excellent Water Efficient Unit – Beyond the Fence’ Award at the 7th National Award for Excellence in Water Management 2010 organised by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) – Godrej Green Business Centre. Sesa Goa won the award for its project ‘Sanjivani- Water for life’
The award ceremony held in Hyderabad earlier this month acknowledged Sesa Goa’s leadership role in implementing water and watershed management projects with the involvement of public/private agencies and the local community. The award was received by Leena Verenkar, Manager Environment & CSR and Nilesh Zore, Sr. CSR Officer, Sesa Goa Ltd. at the hands of Mr. R Karikala Valavan, Commissioner of Industries, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
The award winning project ‘Sanjivani- Water for life’ caters to the water requirement of 1162 households of Kirlapal Dabal village in south Goa benefitting over 5000 villagers. Consisting of a jackwell, a water treatment plant and an overhead storage tank with a capacity of 350 KL, the project has immensely helped the local community. Water shed development which is also a part of this project involved establishment of farmers clubs, user and self help groups, assistance to farmers for availing government schemes, assistance in construction of rain water harvesting and sunken ponds and soil conservation. The project was implemented by Sesa Goa in partnership with the Government of Goa and Mineral foundation of Goa.
The CII Water Awards are presented for effective and positive water management efforts in the industry. Over a hundred companies submitted entries in the relevant category. Short-listed candidates were requested to present their case to an eminent jury of environmental, industrial and economic experts. Sesa Goa’s continued commitment towards the environment and sustainability is responsible for the honour of winning the prestigious 7th National Award for Excellence in Water Management.
