1.2 kg of gold worth Rs 35 lakh seized at Chennai airport

The Customs department at the airport here seized 1.2 kg of gold valued at Rs 35 lakh in two incidents and have arrested one person in this regard, officials said today.
Acting on an information that a baggage was lying "unclaimed" near a baggage conveyor belt area, an official release said on scanning the baggage it found 12 units of gold cut bits weighing 399 grams valued at Rs 11 lakh concealed in milk tins.
As the baggage was not claimed by anyone at the airport, the release said, passenger on seeing "tight scrutiny" carried out by the customs officials might have left the bags.

In the second incident, the customs officials intercepted a passenger who arrived from Riyadh to Chennai on December 1, as he was moving in a "suspicious manner".
Upon examination of his baggage, the officials seized seven units of gold bars weighing 815 grams valued at Rs 24 lakh, the release said.
The passenger was arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, the release added.
