The incident happened at Sindhal village in Tirtol area when armed dacoits barged into their house, Additional Superintendent of Police, Paradip, B S Mishra, said.
The intruders assaulted the family members and fired at them when they resisted, the ASP said.
The deceased was identified as Antaryami Khuntia. His son, brother, and nephew were injured.
The injured were taken to the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack, he added.
