A 14-year-old girl shot and injured another female student and then died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a high school in the US state of Texas, police said.
Information about the motive and the names of those involved in the shooting yesterday at the Alpine High School in west Texas were not released.
The injured student ran outside seeking help and was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't considered life threatening, Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson said.
"We're still in shock. The shooting happened outside a restroom in the school's band hall," Dodson said.
He said the shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A federal agent also was accidentally shot by a marshal as officers responded to the shooting, Dodson said.
The agent's condition was described as stable.
Five shots were fired during the incident, leading to the lockdown of all district schools. A woman who answered the phone at the Alpine Independent School District described the situation as "contained."
The shooting happened less than three weeks after classes began on August 22. The district - comprising only one elementary, middle and high school, with about 1,000 students - went into lockdown after the gunfire.
Alpine is a town of 5,900 residents in western Texas, about 200 miles southeast of El Paso.
