10 lakh houses built for urban poor under JNNURM, RAY: Govt

10,17,423 houses have so far been built for urban poor under different housing schemes like the 2005-06 Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) launched in 2013-14, as against total 13,92,589 houses sanctioned, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
2,10,438 houses were constructed since 2014-15, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Babul Supriyo said in a written reply.
JNNURM was brought to a close by the previous government but the housing component under it was allowed to be implemented by the present dispensation to enable completion of the houses under construction by March 2017.
In effect, 8,04,075 houses were built between 2005-06 and 2014-15, the minister said.
As against this, sanction was given for construction of 5.09 lakh houses for Economically Weaker Sections under Prime Minister's Awas Yojana (PMAY-Urban) launched in June last year.
The total project cost approved under JNNURM and RAY was Rs 40,608 crore while under PMAY it was Rs 28,770 crore in the very first year.
Against the approved central assistance of Rs 21,119 crore, an amount of Rs 20,972 crore has so far been released, including Rs 2,983 crore since 2014-15.
The housing components of JNNURM are Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) and Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) implemented in 943 cities and towns, while RAY is being implemented in another 122 cities and towns.
7,94,091 houses were sanctioned under BSUP, 4,56,650 under IHSDP and 1,41,848 under RAY, Supriyo informed the House.
He added construction of 10,00,383 houses has been completed under the two components of JNNURM and 17,040 under RAY.
