Normal life was affected in Dimapur, Nagaland's largest town and commercial hub, during the 12-hour bandh called by the Public Action Committee (PAC) on Monday, officials said.
The bandh was called by PAC under the aegis of Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), the apex tribal body of Dimapur to contain multiple taxation, syndicate system, extortions, abductions in Dimapur, a statement issued the media cell of PAC said.
The PAC statement said that the bandh was called to send a strong message that the public is tired of multiple taxation, extortions and incidents of kidnappings taking place in Dimapur.
All business establishments, including banks, educational institutions and government offices remained closed, it said.
However, only those students appearing for various examinations were exempted from the purview of the bandh, it added.
PAC Convenor Vekhosayi Nyekha said the bandh passed off peacefully and there were no reports of any untoward incidents.
He also apologised to all those who were affected during the bandh.
The PAC look forward to cooperation from the public even in the near future, he added.
The district administration and the police had made elaborate security arrangements for the safety of tourists and passengers travelling by trains and flights.
