The clash broke out over the battery of a mobile phone, officials said, adding policemen immediately rushed to the spot.
The fight was allegedly picked up by murder convict Harvinder Singh, who was recently shifted from Sangrur jail owing to his poor track record.
The prisoners later attacked police personnel in which eight cops received injuries, the officials said.
The situation was later brought under control.
Officials are trying to find out how the mobile phone made its way into the jail.
