15 more family courts required in Chennai: Amicus Curie

About 15 more Family Courts are needed to dispose of pending cases in exisisting courts here, a court-appointed Amicus Curie today informed the Madras High Court.
Amicus Curie George Williams was appointed by the High Court to go into the issue in the light of a petition by a woman bank employee seeking to transfer her matrimonial case from Perundurai in Erode to Chennai Family Court.
While transfering a matrimonial case involving a woman bank employee from Perundurai in Erode to Chennai family court, Justice N Kirubakaran had earlier raised several questions to the State Law Secretary and the Registrar General and sought a report about the pending cases apart from appointing Advocate George Williams as Amicus Curie to assist the court.

When the matter came up today again, High Court Registrar General's lawyer submitted that already a proposal was sent in 2011 to the government stating that there was a need of five more Family Courts to dispose of the cases and it was under active consideration of the state government.
At this stage, the Amicus Curie submitted that the number of cases was increasing every year and at present it required near about 15 more courts for disposal of the pending cases.
He further submitted that because of the heavy pendency, the Family Court Judges were asked to work on holidays and even after the office hours.

The Judge then posted the matter for further hearing to July 10.
