17 persons rescued from flooded areas

Police today rescued 17 persons of four families from flood ravaged parts of south Kashmir even as heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has increased the possibility of floods in rest of the Valley.
"Four families, consisting of 17 members, were rescued from Birigam village in Qazzigund area of south Kashmir following floods there," a police official said.
He said the families have been evacuated from their homes and lodged in a local panchayat ghar.
Police and army have launched a rescue operation to rescue 19 nomads who are trapped in flood water at Banjarpora in Kulgam district, the official said.

Heavy rains over the past two days has resulted in some parts of south Kashmir Anantnag and Kulgam districts getting flooded.
The official said River Jhelum was flowing at 21.3 feet at Sangam in Anantnag district - slightly over the danger mark of 21 feet.

In Srinagar, the river is flowing several feet below the danger mark of 18 feet.
An official of the MeT department said Qazigund received the highest amount of rainfall at 160.2 mm rain since yesterday morning.
Kokernag area recorded 113.5 mm rainfall during this period followed by Pahalgam at 70.4 mm and Srinagar at 52.8 mm, he said.

Heavy rainfall has resulted in water logging of many roads in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Traffic across the city was moving at snail's pace due to waterlogging problem.
Electricity supply to some areas has been snapped due to heavy rains.
