Seventeen suspected activists of SIMI, banned Islamist student organisation, who were allegedly involved in terror activities, were acquitted by a court here today.
The acquitted included Students Islamic Movement of India former chief Safdar Nagori, alleged key conspirator behind terror attacks in Ahmedabad. Nagori, arrested from Indore in March 2008, is linked to several other terror cases and is in jail.
The suspected SIMI activists, including Nagori, were acquitted by the First Additional Magistrate Court after the prosecution failed to prove charges against them, Hubballi DCP (Law and Order) Hanumanthraya told PTI.
They were arrested from various parts of Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh in 2008, he said.
SIMI suspects were nabbed at Honnali in Davanagere district, Hubballi-Dharwad district and Indore in Madhya Pradesh for their alleged terror activities, Hanumanthraya said.
In Hubballi, the police had raided places believed to be a training ground for terrorist activities. Police had also recovered explosives from parts of the state.
The former chief of SIMI, Nagori had revealed some very important information on the outfit's network during a narco-analysis test conducted on him at the Forensic Science Laboratory at Bengaluru in April 2008, according to police.
Two others - Kamruddin and Pervez - also were subjected to narco tests, police said.
