Two senior leaders of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) were today booked by police for inciting communal tension by making inflammatory remarks at a panchayat at Dulhera village here.
District Magistrate Koshalraj Sharma said after inspecting a CD of the speeches by BKU chief, Naresh Tikait, and its district president of Youth Wing, Puran Singh, a case has been registered against them under section 188 (disobedience to order promulgated by public servant) and section 153a (promoting enmity between different groups) of IPC for making inflammatory remarks and violating prohibitory orders.
The two leaders purportedly made the provocative remarks at the panchayat convened on June 13 to denounce a gangrape incident in the village, he said.
Eight people were arrested by police for raping a woman on June 4 when she was on her way to Dulhera from Shahpur village. She was allegedly abducted by who took her to a nearby graveyard and gangraped her.
Earlier today, protests were held by locals over the remarks made by the BKU leader with police saying they are on the alert to ensure no untoward incident took place in the area.
Locals held protests and burnt effigies of Tikait at several places like Shahpur, Budhana, Sarvate, Shamli, etc.
Police said that security has been tightened and extra personnel, including two companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deployed in the area.
The SP (rural) said nobody would be allowed to create tension in the area and added that all precautionary measures are being taken to check any disruption in the law and order situation.
