The accused brought two identical attache cases, took Rs nine lakh in cash from the dealer and kept it in one of the cases for supplying X-ray plates.
The accused, Gautam Chatterjee, then left the dealer with some excuse with the 'other' attache case.
However, by that time, he tactfully replaced the case and left with the one containing the cash, police said.
Chatterjee had asked the dealer to wait as he would return soon. But when he did not, and his phone was found switched off, the dealer opened the case to discover it was full of writing pads instead of cash.
Besides Chatterjee, the police arrested his accomplice Sikandar Ali and was looking for a third accused, Parimal.
Identifying himself as a senior officer of the Kolkata Port, Parimal introduced the dealer to Chatterjee, who promised to get him X-Ray plates on a very nominal rate.
These persons were into duping business for quite sometime but were never arrested, police said.
