The violence followed an altercation between two groups of people over bursting of crackers in front of a place of worship here late last night, Belgaum SP Sandeep Patil said.

A 28-year old man succumbed to head injuries at a hospital today while the body of another person, stabbed to death, was found in the secluded Fort area, he told PTI.

The injured has been hospitalised.

He said 28 people have been arrested in connection with the violence and the situation was under control with ban orders under Section 144 of CrPc clamped in the entire city. All schools and colleges closed till further orders.

"The situation is under control. No fresh incident has been reported from anywhere in the city. Elaborate security arrangements have been made," Patil said.

Additional police force from neighbouring Hubli had been deployed. Besides, a company of Rapid Action Force had been requisitioned, he added.
