Stressed over repeated stalking by a group of youths, two teenaged girls allegedly committed suicide in Haryana's Rohtak district, police said today.
The main accused, who was named by one of the victims in her suicide note, has been arrested today, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rohtak, Karan Goel said.
Both the victims, students of Class XI and XII, fell unconscious in their coaching institute located on Rohtak-Jind bypass yesterday after which they were rushed to Rohtak's PGIMS hospital, where they died.
Both the girls were taking tuition classes from the private coaching centre, he said, adding, they had consumed a poison-laced fruit juice at the centre.
Two hand written suicide notes of the victims, both aged around 16 and 17, were recovered, the DSP said.
A 19-year-old college dropout, was arrested from Rohtak today.
Goel said that the main accused, who used to roam on a motorcycle, used to allegedly harass the girls outside the coaching centre.
He also said that neither the girls nor their parents had approached the police before with their complaint.
"The parents of the victims lodged their complaints only yesterday," he informed.
A case under various sections of the IPC including, abetment to suicide and stalking, in addition to provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, had been registered against him and an another unidentified accused, he said.
The DSP said that post-mortem examination of the victims was conducted after which the bodies were handed to their relatives.
Police was questioning the accused and trying to find out if more girls were harassed by him or his accomplices, he said.
