Two boys drowned after they were thrown into a canal here by their 35-year-old "mentally unstable" mother, who later tried to commit suicide by jumping into water, police said today.
Following the incident that took place yesterday, the woman's mother-in-law passed away due to shock when she learnt about the death of her grand-children, police said.
According to police, the woman had been suffering from chronic abdominal pain and she killed her children as she was worried about who would take care of them after her death.
"Anita Kumhar, a resident of Dubiyara village under Majhgawan police station, went the nearby canal along with her two sons Abhishek (5) and Anand (3) yesterday morning. She threw both her sons into the canal and later jumped into it," Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sanjay Sahu informed.
The woman's ailing mother-in-law Ramkali (60) died out of shock when she heard the news of her two grandchildren," he added.
According to Sahu, the woman left her home when her husband was away to attend a marriage ceremony.
He said that some youths standing nearby saw the woman jumping into the canal and rescued her, but they could not save the children. The bodies of the two minors were found after two hours.
Sahu said that a case against Anita Kumhar has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC.
"The woman is mentally unstable. She has now been kept under observation at a hospital. She said that she had been suffering from abdominal pain since the past three-four years and failed to get relief despite treatment," he added.
"The woman is saying that she wanted to commit suicide due to abdominal pain. The woman said that she killed her children as she was worried about who would take care of them after her death. So, she threw her sons before jumping into the canal," Sahu said.
Further investigation is on.
