Two senior police officers were showcaused and two constables taken off duty in connection with a breach in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's security during a public meeting in North Dinajpur district, home department officials said today.
Two teenage girls had breached the chief minister's security and had climbed the podium where Banerjee, who has Z+ security, was addressing a public meeting at Hemtabad last week.
Home department officials said the government showcaused one officer in the rank of deputy superintendent of police and an inspector who were in charge of the security at the D-zone set up for Z-category VIPs in front of the dais.
The showcause notice was slapped on the two police officers after initial probe into the matter revealed their negligence leading to the security breach by the two girls, another senior officer in the home department said.
The two police constable, who were taken off duty, have been asked to give reasons for their laxity in carrying out their duties on that day.
The two teenage girls, identified as Rabiya and Masuma Khatun, had crawled up the stairs of the dais and the one of them tried to touch Banerjee's feet while she was delivering her speech.
One of the two girls had claimed that they had gone up the stage to seek justice in the killing of their father S K Mafijuddin in 2015 over a land dispute.
Police had questioned the two girls, who were taken to the Raiganj Super Speciality Hospital soon after the incident.
Senior officials claimed that the move by the two girls was pre-planned as they had gone to the chief minister's earlier meetings in Malda and Gangarampur in South Dinajpur.
