Two women related to NRI industrialist Ajay Gupta's younger brother Atul, died in a road accident here today, while five other family members, including two children, were seriously injured, police said.
The seven members related to Atul Gupta's wife were returning home in Saharanpur's Madho Nagar from Delhi when around 11 am their car collided with a stationary truck on the Saharanpur-Mazzaffarnagar state highway near Deoband, they said.
Manju Gupta (70) and Namita Gupta (32) died in the crash, while Anshul Gupta (45), Rajiv Gupta, Shaily Gupta (40), Mahi Gupta (12) and Bhavya (10) sustained injuries, SP (Rural) Vidyasagar Mishra said.
Manju Gupta was Anshul's mother, while Namita was his wife. The injured were airlifted to a hospital the police officer said.
Earlier in the day, the women and children had landed in Delhi after attending the engagement ceremony of Ajay Gupta's nephew in Dubai. Anshul Gupta and his brother-in-law Rajiv Gupta had gone to pick them up from the airport, Mishra said.
Rajiv Gupta was driving the car when the incident occurred, the SP said, adding the impact of the crash was such that the front half of the compact sedan was reduced to a mangled heap of metal.
The Gupta family consisting of brothers Ajay, Atul and Rajesh is one of the wealthiest NRI business families, and is based in South Africa and Dubai. Their business interests include computers, media and mining.
