The eight-year old Kurumba tribe girl was taken to a lonely place in a tea-estate at Kinnakorai, 60 km from here, and sexually assaulted on April 3 evening.
The girl came home crying and narrated the incident to her mother that night.
The parents, after discussing with their community heads, lodged the police complaint only this morning, based on which police arrested Prathap, a labourer, police said.
The girl was subjected to medical examination at the government hospital here which confirmed the rape, police said adding the accused was produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody.
