Twenty-seven children died during the period of Centre's ambitious immunisation programme 'Mission Indradhanush' since its inception, the government today said but claimed these deaths were unrelated to the vaccine administered during the period.
"As part of the Adverse Event Following Immunisation (AEFI) surveillance and monitory system, the Ministry constantly monitors the programme and after active analysis of the Mission Indradhanush reports, it was found that 27 children deaths were reported during the period of Mission Indradhanush," Health Minister J P Nadda said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
"However, preliminary investigations do not suggest any relationship of the reported deaths with the vaccines administered during the period of Mission Indradhanush," he said, adding no death has been reported in pregnant women during the period.
The government said the Mission has covered more than 195 lakh children till June in 497 districts across 35 states and union territories.
"Mission Indradhanush aims to increase full immunisation coverage in India to atleast 90 per cent by 2020. Till June 2016, the mission has covered 195.5 lakh children and 51.1 lakh pregnant women," Nadda said.
Under Mission Indradhanush, depicting seven colours of the rainbow, the government provides vaccination for seven preventable diseases - diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and Hepatitis B.
Four new vaccinations have been added to the programme recently.
Nadda had recently asked his Ministry officials to find ways to improve routine immunisation so that India can stop relying on special 'mission-mode' projects to deliver vaccines to children.
