280 tube wells to be set up in Punjab

In an effort to address the water shortage problem in Kandi area of the state, the Punjab Government has given its approval for digging 280 new tube wells that would facilitate irrigational facilities.
Disclosing this here today, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, the state minister for Irrigation, said the government is fully committed to encourage diversification in the area to bring the development on par with other areas of the state.
The minister said the government has got a comprehensive study done on the irrigation requirement of these area and as per findings of the study, 280 spots were identified for digging tube wells.
Sekhon further said the Irrigation department will shortly float the tender for digging of 280 tube wells, the cost of which would be Rs 108 crore.
He said that the government has decided that 140 deep tube wells be handed over to farmer community by September 30 this year and remaining would be operational by March 31, 2014.
