Three youths from the city died when their car collided head-on with another vehicle on the Mandarmoni beach in East Midnapore district in the wee hours of today, a senior police officer said.
Shibraj Naskar, a resident of Beliaghata, Surya Dasgupta and Viabhav Rajneesh of Rajarhat, died on the spot when their car collided head-on with another car on the Mandarmoni beach at around 5.30 AM, Additional SP (Rural) East Midnapore Zafar Ajmal Kidwai told PTI.
"The three youths died on the spot while two persons, who were residents of Jharkhand, in the another car escaped with minor injuries," Kidwai said.
Asked if the two vehicles were racing on the beach, which was banned, Kidwai said, "Because it was a head-on collision it seems unlikely they were into any kind of racing. Still we are looking into the matter."
There were not many people on the beach today like other days as it was a bit cloudy and those present there informed the local police station.
"Gas cutters were used to cut open the car, which was twisted after the accident, to extricate the three bodies of the victims," he said, adding that the other two persons in another car were rushed to the local hospital.
According to another police officer, these three youths befriended the other two after reaching Mandarmoni yesterday.
Incidentally, today's mishap took place within three months after a man died in an accident this May.
Siddhartha Roy Chowdhury of Khardah in North 24-Parganas had died when the SUV, in which he was travelling along with his family members, turned turtle while running on the same Mandarmoni beach.
