According to police, a former leader of Samajwadi Party's Lohia Vahini and his associates have been accused of having a hand in the gunning down of one Babulal here this evening.
Deputy SP (Chhata) Piyush Kumar said that the clash which led to the killing took place after the son of a candidate in the panchayat polls was allegedly roughed up by those associated with a rival group.
When Suresh Chandra, the candidate for the Kamai Panchayat seat, went to confront those who had allegedly assaulted his son, a clash broke out between the two sides, police said.
Following a complaint filed by the deceased's father, police said they have registered a case and launched a search for Singh and his associates.
