Police sources said the builder Sukanta Mondal and his companion Gopal Mondal were hospitalised after being hit with revolver butt by the gang, reportedly led by one Munna Pandey from Kasba area.
Sukanta, who was also seriously beaten up, claimed to the police and neighbours that the gang also fired one round but none was hit.
The gang, which came on a motor cycle, escaped when neigbbours rushed on hearing the commotion, police said.
The labourers at the site told the police the gang first came to the spot and demanded money and on being refused thratened them.
