As many as 35 of historical monuments, 12 of them in the national capital, have become "untraceable" due to changing weather conditions and urbanisation, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch said in a written reply that besides the dozen monuments in Delhi, the rest are in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
"Some monuments have been reported to be untraceable due to urbanisation, commercialisation and changing climatic and geographic conditions," Katoch said.
The monuments that have disappeared from the capital include the Barakhamba Tomb cemetery, Siege Battery bearing British era inscriptions, and a mound known as Jogabai.
Katoch said efforts are on to locate and identify the untraceable monuments through old records, revenue maps and published materials.
To another question, she said the government was considering recommendations of Justice Mukul Mudgal committee for amending Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.
The panel had submitted its recommendations in October last year and the Ministry is considering them, she said.
