The incident took place around 7 AM near Kanjhawala when the victims were returning to their native village Kharkhoda in Haryana's Sonepat district after attending a religious function at a temple in Gurgaon.
"Sanjay (35), who was driving the car, suddenly lost control and their speeding car hit a roadside tree. The impact was so hard that those who were sitting in the front seats and were not wearing seat belts were thrown out of the car," a police official said.
The injured where identified as Sonu's wife and three children-- Chetna (16), Anurag (12) and Aniket (10) and Nidhi (4). Among those injured, the condition of Chetna is said to be critical.
Police suspect that the driver was sleep deprived and a concoction of speed and drowsiness on part of the driver led to the fatal accident.
Locals claimed that the car was traveling at speed higher than 100 km/hour when the accident took place. They had heard a loud bang when the car hit the tree after which they rushed to rescue the victims and one of them informed police.
Some eye-witnesses told police that the car first hit the divider on the road and then rammed into the tree. Police will now reconstruct the incident to put together the actual sequence of events.
