Four out of the five districts in western Maharashtra have received more than 100 per cent of average rainfall so far this monsoon, Pune Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaiskar said on Sunday.
He said only Solapur, with 78 per cent rainfall, lagged, while Pune topped with 120 per cent.
The division consists of Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli and Solapur districts.
"Barring Solapur which has got 78 percent rainfall, all other districts, namely Pune, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur have received more than 100 percent rainfall," he said.
Mhaiskar said dams in the region, with the exception of Ujani in Solapur, were overflowing.
"Water in Ujani dam is at 50 per cent at the moment but we expect it to fill up in the next 48 hours. Koyna dam is also overflowing. All the rivers in Kolhapur district have crossed the danger mark," he said.
He said due to continuous rainfall in the Pune region, more than 900 families, or about 4500 people, have been shifted to safer places.
"IMD has issued heavy rain warning for the next 24 hours. Citizens are advised to not venture out of their houses unless absolutely required," Mhaiskar said.
